Requirements

What a Bitcoin node needs

Approximate figures for a full node: chains only grow, so check the current requirements of your client before you size the disk.

ResourceWhat to plan for
DiskMore than 700 GB for the block chain and growing, plus room for an Electrum server index. NVMe makes the initial sync much faster.
Memory8 GB is enough to run a node. Give the initial sync a large database cache (16 GB or more) and it finishes far sooner.
CPUA few fast cores verify new blocks easily; more cores speed up signature checks during the initial sync.
BandwidthA listening node can upload hundreds of gigabytes to several terabytes a month to its peers. An unmetered port removes the worry.
Initial syncUsually hours rather than days on fast NVMe with a large cache, depending on the CPU and on your peers.

Setup

Set up your Bitcoin node

1. Install Bitcoin Core and verify it

Download the Linux release from bitcoincore.org together with SHA256SUMS and SHA256SUMS.asc, check the hash and the signatures, then install the binaries:

sha256sum --ignore-missing --check SHA256SUMS
tar -xzf bitcoin-*-x86_64-linux-gnu.tar.gz
sudo install -m 0755 bitcoin-*/bin/* /usr/local/bin/

2. Configure the node

Create a dedicated bitcoin user and put the settings in ~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf:

server=1
txindex=1 # needed by Fulcrum; electrs does not need it
dbcache=16000 # MB, for the initial sync; lower it once synced

3. Run it as a service

Bitcoin Core’s source tree provides a systemd unit, contrib/init/bitcoind.service. Copy it to /etc/systemd/system/, adjust the user and paths, then start the node and follow the sync with bitcoin-cli getblockchaininfo:

sudo systemctl enable --now bitcoind
bitcoin-cli getblockchaininfo | grep -E 'blocks|verificationprogress'

Ports and firewall

  • 8333/tcpPeer-to-peer. Open it to run a listening node that helps the network.
  • 8332/tcpRPC. Keep it on localhost; never expose it to the internet.
  • 50001-50002/tcpElectrum server, plain and TLS, only if you serve wallets outside the machine.

Allow only what you need with a firewall, log in with SSH keys, and keep an eye on disk health.

FAQ

Bitcoin node hosting: questions

All questions
Can I pay for my Bitcoin node server with bitcoin?

Yes. Top up your balance with on-chain BTC, from $100 with a bonus of up to +50%, and the balance pays for the server every month. No KYC: an email and a password open the account.

How much disk does a Bitcoin full node need?

More than 700 GB for the block chain today, and it keeps growing, plus room for an Electrum index if you run one. A pruned node needs only a few gigabytes, but it cannot serve the full history or an Electrum server.

How long does the initial sync take?

Usually hours rather than days on fast NVMe with a large database cache, depending on the CPU and on your peers. Lower the cache once the node is in sync.

Can I run a Lightning node on the same server?

Yes. LND or Core Lightning run comfortably next to Bitcoin Core, and every server includes a dedicated IPv4 and a /64 IPv6. Note that we accept on-chain bitcoin only for top-ups, not Lightning payments.

Are nodes and mining allowed?

Yes. Full nodes, Electrum servers and Lightning nodes are welcome, and so is mining on your own server, within our Acceptable Use Policy.
